A related technique is think in terms of value paths. A value path is the sequence of user actions (on and off your platform) that result in something of value to the user. You want to make it easy, fast, intuitive to complete the first few value paths. The nice thing about this is that it connects back to usage based pricing. The best pricing metrics for usage based pricing are often those that are based on the completion of value paths (often, not always).
