Why I switched from Substack to beehiiv
I started writing Growth Unhinged nearly five years ago. To be honest, it was somewhat on a whim. Back then, writing on Substack felt like a no-brainer.
Since going full-time, the limitations of Substack have become nearly impossible to ignore. It felt like Substack stopped innovating for writers and decided to become a closed social media platform instead. As an example, Substack introduced the concept of followers in 2023 and pushed it hard. Growth Unhinged now has more than 113,000 followers compared to about 82,000 subscribers. Followers see what the Substack algorithm promotes with no direct relationship to the writer, similar to followers on LinkedIn.
This was the first of many betrayals of creator ownership that I believe are good for Substack and bad for writers. Substack went after Twitter with their Notes feature. They started battling Instagram with live video broadcasts. And now they’re aggressively courting celebrities to fill the social media feed. What I haven’t seen: features that help me deliver a better experience for readers.
I got tired of complaining about the limitations and finally did something about it. I switched over to beehiiv on December 31st and honestly I wish I had done it sooner (I also signed up beehiiv as a newsletter sponsor!). You probably didn’t notice; it was quite seamless. The team has been a delight to work with and it’s clear that they’re as obsessed with newsletters as I am (Tyler, the CEO, has a great one himself).
Now that I’m on beehiiv I’m taking more control of the newsletter look and feel (you can see for yourself here), improving deliverability, collecting better data about readers, learning what an API key is, setting up automations, and no longer paying a 10% Substack tax. I’m also excited to try some of their newest features: digital products, podcast pages (like this one), an AI website builder, and 🔥 website analytics. This shift will let me invest more in community, events, and personalized experiences in 2026.

New: The 2026 conversion survey
